Unlike power zoom, the XF1's zoom ring provides direct manual controls, keeping the zoom action very smooth. For telephoto shots beyond the 4x optical zoom range, Intelligent Digital Zoom doubles your zoom to the equivalent of 8x zoom and delivers excellent sharpness and detail. As well as PASM shooting modes, there are two custom settings, the company’s EXR auto mode, 16 scene modes and an Advanced Filter menu with options for motion panorama (120°, 180° and 360°), 3D and a two-image multiple exposure, among others. Drive modes include a ‘best-frame’ capture over 16 frames, and continuous high-speed shooting up to 10fps at medium quality, or 7fps at full resolution. Build and handlingI know that nowadays we are used to have a button for every feature, that we only need to press. In times of android, WIN7/8 and Cams that do absolutely everything outomatically, we are not used to do something without an electronic button. The second key piece in the imaging jigsaw with regards to image quality on an enthusiast compact is the model’s lens, and Fujifilm has equipped the XF1 with an appealing optic. The model utilises a Fujinon lens covering a focal range of 25-100mm in 35mm equivalent terms, complete with a maximum aperture of f/1.8. Unfortunately, although not unexpectedly, the maximum aperture of f/1.8 is only available at the wide end of the focal range, swiftly dropping down to the maximum aperture of f/4.9 at the tele end of the zoom. The good news is that it features built-in optical image stabilisation for sharp shots in low light conditions, while the lens also capable of capturing macro images at a distance of just 3cm.

For the most part, when I turn on the camera, I get this message on the screen: "Lens Control Error." According to the manual, this error message means that the moving parts of the camera is obstructed and thus requires me to turn on and off the camera. The problem is that nothing is obstructing the moving parts of camera and despite turning on and off the camera, the message usually does not go away. Occasionally, the message goes away and I can take photos, which takes me to problem 2.

Our resolution chart indicates centre sharpness, for which the XF1 gives a solid performance when used in its optimum setting. When used at the 50mm focal-length setting, the camera is able to resolve up to the 24 marker at ISO 100, which is competitive for a camera at this level but not particularly outstanding.
